Judd’s Hill Red Three - Pack

Judd’s Hill has no affiliation with actor Judd Nelson.

But man, it would be cool if it did.

Sure, there’s already plenty to enjoy with a Judd’s Hill Red 3-Pack. You get a bright and complex 2007 Central Coast Pinot Noir, a spicy and dark 2006 Napa Valley Merlot, and a decadently explosive 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. What you don’t get, though, is Portland, Maine’s native son and ‘80s Brat Pack bad boy Judd Nelson.

Sure, the Pinot Noir from the San Ysidro Vineyard nestled between the Gavilan and Diablo mountains has hints of fresh strawberries and tart yet sweet flavor notes with aromas of clove and nutmeg. But it’d be even better if it had a label with Judd’s street-smart character Eddie Keaton from 1984’s Making the Grade, or perhaps Robin “Stormy” Weathers from 1986’s From the Hip.

And you simply CAN’T taste the Merlot’s black fruit flavors with notes of anise and dusty tannins without longing for Nelson’s stellar 1985 turn as Alec Newbary in St. Elmo’s Fire. You’ll want to hang on to this wine as if it were The Pretenders’ first album, but once it’s open it’ll be gone faster than Rodimus Prime, whom Judd voiced in 1986’s Transformers: The Movie.

But the Cabernet Sauvignon is the John Bender of this Breakfast Club (we accept no responsibility for your decision to drink wine for breakfast, especially before work). It’s brash and outspoken with its ripe plum and cassis flavor; its finish is long and full of smooth, fine-grained tannins that will keep going long after you’ve threatened eight Saturdays worth of detentions.

If you ask us, Judd’s Hill is missing a great branding opportunity.
